Ute Mountain Ute Tribe uses stimulus fund to build lake fence
The Weeminuche Construction Authority, a business owned by the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe of Colorado, is using $442,000 in stimulus funds to build a fence around Lake Nighthorse.

The fence is needed to protect the lake from trespassing and unwanted activity. "People with monster trucks like to see what they can do," Tyler Artichoker of the Animas-La Plata Project told The Durango Herald.

Lake Nighthorse, named for retired Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colorado), is a man-made reservoir. The water belongs to the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, the Southern Ute Tribe, the Navajo Nation and will be used to supply the tribes and local communities.

The Animas-La Plata Project is part of a major tribal water rights settlement that Campbell shepherded through Congress.
