Tribal police chiefs in Wisconsin met with federal prosecutors on Wednesday to discuss law enforcement issues in Indian Country.
Tribal police need help combating a rise in gangs and drugs on reservations, the chiefs said. They cited concerns about adequate facilities, federal funding and officer recruitment.
"They appeared to be not really fully understanding what goes on in Indian country," Frank Taylor, the police chief of the St. Croix Chippewa Indians "I think this was kind of an eye opener for them."
U.S. Attorney Jim Santelle from Milwaukee and Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy O'Shea from Madison attended the meeting.
