Ousted Lac Vieux council members challenge results of election

Members of the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Michigan are upset that several tribal leaders refuse to step down from the council.

Members ousted seven from the council in an election last month. But the losing candidates are challenging the results and prevented the new council from being sworn in on Tuesday.

"I think it's important to the community, as well as our children, to let them know that they have rights,” June Smith, a tribal member who participated in a protest on Thursday, told WLUC-TV. “Their rights have been stomped on, our elders rights have been stomped on...it's just so shameful."

The election challenge is being heard in tribal court.
