Incoming Osage chief promises action on reservation status case
John D. Red Eagle, the newly-elected chief of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma, says litigation will be a priority under his administration.

The biggest case is the tribe's lawsuit over the status of its reservation. The tribe says Congress set aside Osage County as a reservation in 1872.

But the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed and said Congress diminished the reservation in 1906. The U.S. Supreme Court has given the tribe until October 22 to file an appeal of the decision.

“Court litigation will take priority,” Red Eagle told The Tulsa World. “We want to keep our nation moving forward (in a direction) that we’ve been going in over the last six years.”

Red Eagle and Scott BigHorse, the new assistant chief, will take office on August 4.
