Letter: Be respectful in debate over Eastern Cherokee bear parks
"For 20 years, various tradition-minded Cherokee have asked for the bear exhibits to close. Bear is a relative of the Cherokee and captivity is disrespectful. But, as in all cultures today, money speaks louder than tradition.

Non-Cherokee are dreaming if they think they can impose their will. If you want change, respectfully implore the Tribal Council and Chief to intervene on behalf of the bears (and other animals) and impose a timetable to phase out these exhibits. Point out that the tribe deserves a modern and humane exhibition facility that represents the ethics of Cherokee culture.

The Cherokee have had 250-plus years of being told what they must do and have little to show for it. Try tactics that are respectful and don't attempt to embarrass the tribe or they will close ranks."
