The White Earth Band of Ojibwe
Indians of Minnesota has declared Ojibwe as the official language on the reservation.
Fewer than 10 first generation speakers of the language are left on the reservation.
The tribe hopes its declaration will change course for the future.
“It means our Ojibwe language has priority over any other language within the tribe," Chairwoman Erma J. Vizenor said in a statement, The Bemidji Pioneer reported. "The Ojibwe language is the foundation to our culture, traditions, history, and spirituality. It is who we are.”
