Shinnecock Nation revives lawsuit over federal recognition delay
The Shinnecock Nation of New York is reviving its federal recognition lawsuit amid additional delays at the Interior Department.

The tribe was one of the first to file a petition for recognition back in 1978. The Bureau of Indian Affairs finally gave the tribe a favorable answer in June.

But two groups have filed a challenge with the Interior Board of Indian Appeals, resulting in another delay in the process. The tribe says it can't continue to wait.

“We filed because this could go on for quite some time,” Trustee Lance . Gumbs told The Southampton Star. "And 32 years was too long to wait.”

The two groups that have filed the challenge lack standing to do so, according to government attorneys. The IBIA has not issued a ruling in the case.
