The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Wisconsin has won Environmental Protection Agency approval of its water quality standards.

The tribe developed its own standards under the Clean Water Act. The law recognizes tribal regulatory authority over waters within their lands.

“Water Quality Standards are the backbone of the Clean Water Act,” Larry Wawronowicz, the tribe’s deputy administrator for natural rResources, told The Lakeland Times. “The waters within the reservation are now protected by federally approved water quality standards on the reservation."

The EPA has approved water quality standards for more than 30 tribes across the nation.
