"Neither counties nor the state government should be in the business of making it hard for people to vote.

That’s the bottom line on the situation in Benson County and some other North Dakota counties, where a new vote-by-mail system means only one polling place per county will be open Nov. 2.

One is not enough, as county leaders should recognize, especially now that tribal leaders at Spirit Lake not only are asking for a polling place on the reservation but are offering to pay for it.

The Benson County situation is such that the tribe might wind up chartering a bus to take tribal members into Minnewaukan, N.D., to vote, Herald staff writer Kevin Bonham reported.

In North Dakota, it’s reasonable to suspect that American Indian voters may also be affected, especially in places where people move more often and so may not get steady mail service."
