Indian women held a protest at the office of Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), one of 92 Republicans who voted against the Tribal Law and Order Act.

King has not said why he voted against the bill, which improves law enforcement on reservations. His district includes trust land owned by the Winnebago Tribe, the Omaha Tribe and the Ponca Tribe.

"These sorts of jurisdictional problems made it difficult for non-Natives to stand trial for their crimes,” activist Susan Barta told The Sioux City Journal. “It also discouraged rape victims to step forward out of fear their attacker would never be prosecuted. We want to control our own local issues, like every other American.”
