Purcell Powless, former Oneida Nation chairman, passes on at 84
Purcell Powless, a former chairman of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, died on Friday, November 5. He was 84.

Powless led the tribe from 1967 to 1990. During that time, the tribe entered the gaming industry and expanded its land base.

"Purcell leaves a legacy of authority without great force, integrity and respect built upon his honesty, and most of all love for his family, his people and his nation," the tribe said in a statement, The Green Bay Press Gazette reported.

Powless served in World War II.
