Shakopee Tribe given a Jefferson Award for philanthropic efforts
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota has received a prestigious award for its philanthropic efforts.

The tribe was previously selected as a regional winner of the Jefferson Award. At a ceremony on Tuesday, the tribe was chosen as the national winner for its region.

“We are honored to have been selected for the Jefferson Award,” Vice Chairman Glynn A. Crooks said in a statement. “Part of who we are as Dakota people is to help others.”

Over the past 13 years, the tribe has donated more than $192.7 million to charitable organizations, other tribes, and Indian organizations. The tribe has also made more than $389 million in loans to other tribes for economic development projects.
