Chase Iron Eyes: North Dakota better without Fighting Sioux nick
"The Fighting Sioux saga finally is coming to an end.

Nov. 30 marked the deadline for UND to get approval from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Sioux to continue using the Fighting Sioux name. Spirit Lake had approved UND’s use of the name while Standing Rock did not give the required consent.

Thus, North Dakotans find themselves moving forward regardless of personal opinion.

Judging from the amount of comments I hear, I am sure there is an overwhelming disappointment within the majority of North Dakota’s non-Indian population as the name moves toward retirement.

But it is important for everyone to understand that this is not the result of politically correct liberals telling us good heartland folk what to do. This change is a result of more than 40 years of hard work to educate people about why using Indians as mascots is wrong."
