Nez Perce man sentenced to six months for state trooper incident
A member of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho was sentenced to six months in federal prison for an assault involving a state trooper.

Ricardo Daniel Rodriguez, 39, was charged with a misdemeanor for the May 2009 incident. He could have faced a felony charge but federal law only applies to assault against federal officers.

Rodriguez and another tribal member, Randall Vernon Ellenwood, engaged in a fight with Jeffory Talbott after a stop on the reservation. Talbott discharged his gun, killing Ellenwood, who was 50 at the time.

Rodriguez was sentenced to the maximum under federal law. He was also ordered to pay $4,000 in restitution to cover Talbott's medical bills.
