Gas station a good business for Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe

The Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe of Washington is expanding the Gliding Eagle Marketplace with more gas pumps and a coffee stand.

The tribe opened the facility seven years ago. It has become the second biggest tribal enterprise, after the The Point Casino.

“There are many, many, many times during the day the pumps are completely full,” Noel Higa, the tribe's economic development director, told The Kitsap Sun. “It shouldn’t be as busy as it is."

The tribe prices its gas lower than other stations. The tribe collects the same tax as the state's and receives a 75 percent reimbursement.

Higa wouldn't disclose revenues but said the volume of gasoline sold at the station doubled between 2008 and 2009.
