Keweenaw Bay activists camp out at planned mining site

Members of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community of Michigan have camped out on public land in protest of a proposed nickel and copper mine.

The Stand for the Land group plans to occupy the Eagle Rock site for as long as possible. They want to stop Kennecott Eagle Minerals, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, from developing the mine.

“I’m here because this is a sacred spot to our people,” tribal member Charlotte Loonsfoot told Headwaters News.

Cynthia Pryor, another tribal member, was arrested by state police for trespassing as part of the protest. She has been released pending a hearing on May 6.
