The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota has put an end to lineal descendency in tribal enrollment.
Prospective members of the tribe must have at least 1/8th degree of Hidatsa, Mandan or Arikara blood. Previously, membership was open to all descendants of an enrolled member.
The tribe also imposed a blood quantum requirement on tribal leaders.
Candidates for council and chairman must have a minimum of 1/4th degree of Hidatsa, Mandan or Arikara blood.
