Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe fires ICWA director after drug charge

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts fired the director of its Indian Child Welfare Act program after she was arrested on a drug possession charge.

Ronda Jones-Hughes, 35, pleaded no contest to possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana in Florida. The incident occurred last January, four months before being hired by the tribe.

"We should have a no-tolerance policy in place for something like that, especially for someone working with children," elder Paul Mills told The Cape Cod Times.

The charge against Jones-Hughes, who is a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, was first reported by Reel Wamps.
