Health Canada transfers Native elders out of reserve in Manitoba

Health Canada has airlifted more than a dozen elders out of the Oxford House First Nation in Manitoba after they were forced out of their care facility.

The elders were staying at a high school on the reserve when part of the ceiling at their facility collapsed. Initially, the government didn't want to transfer them to other facilities, the community's doctor said.

"I thought they were joking when they said they weren't helping," Walter Hoeppner told CBC News.

Health Canada airlifted the elders last night.
