County settles federal recognition suit with Mishewal Wappo Tribe

Lake County in California has withdrawn from the federal recognition lawsuit of the Mishewal Wappo Tribe of California.

The county agreed to drop out after the tribe said it wouldn't seek land in the county for at least 10 years after gaining federal recognition.

Two other counties remain a part of the lawsuit, which was filed by the tribe against the Interior Department. Three cities were denied a request to intervene this week.

The tribe was terminated by an act of Congress in 1959. The lawsuit claims the federal government failed to abide by the law.
