Hispanics outnumber American Indian population in Oklahoma

The Hispanic population in Oklahoma is now larger than the American Indian and Alaska Native population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Hispanics make up 9 percent of the state's population. That surpasses the 8.5 percent for Native Americans.

In number, Hispanics also surpassed Native Americans. According to the Census, there were 332,007 Hispanics in Oklahoma in 2010, compared to 321,687 Native Americans.

"I suspect that Native Americans took a little bit of pride in being the largest minority population," state Rep. Paul Wesselhoft, a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, told the Associated Press. "Now it's the Hispanic population that can now take that pride."
