Nebraska bill would allocate $15K to address Whiteclay issues

A bill in the Nebraska Legislature would allocate $15,000 to make improvements in the Whiteclay area.

Whiteclay is home to four liquor stores that sell 4.96 million cans of beer a year, mainly to residents of the nearby Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The money would help address health, safety and law enforcement issues in the area.

"$15,000 is just such a small amount of money it's almost embarrassing," Judi gaiashkibos, the executive director of the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs, said at a hearing on LB282, The Lincoln Journal Star reported. "But I also think it's hopeful and promising, and so you have to start somewhere."

Last year, the Legislature set aside $25,000 economic development, law enforcement and health programs in Whiteclay.
