Amy Trice, former chairwoman of Kootenai Tribe, passes away

Amy Trice, a former chairwoman of the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, died last Thursday.

Trice made headlines in 1974 when she declared "war" against the United States. She drew attention to the tribe's poverty and lack of federal recognition.

Her efforts led to the establishment of a 12-acre reservation, housing and a clinic. Later, she helped bring gaming to the tribe.

Trice is being laid to rest today at the Kootenai Mission.
