Eastern Cherokee council targets fraudulent Cherokee groups

Leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina have established the Cherokee Identity Protection Committee.

The tribe is concerned about fraudulent groups that claim Cherokee ancestry. Most have no documented ties to the historic Cherokee Nation.

“Many times people are taking our identity," Big Cove Rep. Perry Shell told The Cherokee One Feather.

The Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma has identified 212 groups that claim Cherokee ancestry.
