Council at United Auburn Indian Community faces recall effort

Members of the United Auburn Indian Community of California have initiated a recall proceeding against the tribal council.

A group led by former chairwoman Jessica Tavares and former council member Dolly Suehead are upset with the direction of the tribe. Among other complaints, they cite a $1 million pledge made by the council to keep the Kings basketball team in Sacramento.

"It's time for this outrageous rip-off of our tribe to end, and those who committed it to be removed from the council," Suehead said in a statement, according to news reports.

Doug Elmets, a spokesperson for the tribe, said no money has changed hands.
