Poarch Creeks donate $20K to Center for Native American Youth

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Alabama on Monday announced a $20,000 donation to the new Center for Native American Youth.

Robert McGhee, the tribe's treasurer, presented the check to former Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), who started the center at the Aspen Institute. The center will focus on the health, safety and well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native youth.

"I am determined to try to make a difference in the lives of Indian children," Dorgan told tribal leaders at the National Congress of American Indians winter session yesterday.

Dorgan, who used $1 million in leftover campaign funds to start the center, is bringing in tribal leaders and other advocates to serve on his board. NCAI President Jefferson Keel has agreed to join the board.
