Aquinnah Wampanaog Tribe aims for better town relations

The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is hoping to foster better relations with the town of Aquinnah now that two of its members are on the board of selectmen.

The tribe encouraged participation in last week's election that saw Beverly Wright oust an incumbent from the board. Wright is a former chairwoman of the tribe and currently sits on the tribal council.

"I am hopeful that having someone on the board of selectmen who is aware of the tribe's rights and sovereignty will help to clarify the perspective of the tribal government, and respect the rights of the tribe as well as the town," current Chairwoman Cheryl Andrews Maltais told The Martha's Vineyard Times.

Wright joins Spencer Booker, another tribal member, on the town's three-person board.
