South Dakota committee approves Indian voting district maps

The South Dakota Legislative Redistricting Committee approved changes to voting districts on reservations across the state.

Committee members traveled to every reservation as part of their duties. Their goal was to protect Indian voting rights in hopes of avoiding legal challenges that surfaced after the last redistricting process.

"Obviously, one of the things we're considering in all these maps is the threat of legal action," said House Republican leader David Lust, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported.

Native Americans make up nearly 9 percent of the state's population.
