Ramapough man's family wins $2.1M award in police shooting

A jury in New Jersey awarded $2.1 million to the family of a Ramapough Lunaape Nation man who was fatally shot by a state police officer.

Emil Mann was killed after a confrontation between tribal members and park rangers in April 2006. Retired officer Chad Walder was acquitted of manslaughter but he was the target of a civil lawsuit that ended with a verdict against the state.

“We are so relieved for the family,” attorney Nick Brustin told The Bergen Record. “I hope this gives them some sense of peace and closure.”

The incident prompted the state to improve its relationship with Native Americans.
