Shakopee Tribe sees success with organic recycling facility

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community operates one of the largest organic recycling facilities in Minnesota

The facility opened last fall. It process organic waste into compost, which the tribe sells and also uses for its businesses.

"It saves us money and generates a usable product," Stan Ellison, the tribe's land and natural resources director, told The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "In the big picture, it helps reduce global warming."

The facility is open to the public so people and local governments can drop off organic waste. It takes about 12 weeks to turn the material into compost that's suitable for landscaping.
