Lac du Flambeau Band and state work on treaty fishing deal

The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced an ongoing agreement affecting the the tribe's treaty fishing rights.

For the 2012 season, the tribe agreed to a two-bag limit on walleye in 14 lakes. A three-bag limit remains in place for all other lakes.

"We believe that the agreement is good for both the northern tourism interests and the tribe,” DNR Secretary Stepp said in a press release.

The tribe reserved fishing rights in off-reservation areas under an 1863 treaty. Its members are among the most active during the fishing season.
