Opinion: GOP roadblock to the Violence Against Women Act

"With their continuing attacks on abortion rights and reproductive health services, Congressional Republicans have shown themselves to be insensitive to women’s concerns. This week, the Senate is expected to take up the proposed reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, another measure many Republicans are opposing.

The 1994 law is central to the nation’s efforts to combat domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. Previous reauthorizations, in 2000 and 2005, sailed through Congress with scant opposition. Yet the bill now before the full Senate received not a single Republican vote when it was approved by the Judiciary Committee in February."
