Little River Band to plant thousands of trees at industrial site

The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians in Michigan will plant thousands of trees at an old industrial site.

The tribe hopes the black willow trees will draw toxic chemicals from the ground. The 1.5-acre site once housed a sawmill, a salt mine, several chemical companies and manufacturing plants.

"Everybody polluted the heck out of that site for years," Jimmie Mitchell, the tribe's natural resources director, told the Associated Press. "It was a dumping ground for slag from factories."
