Leaders of the
Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota are being accused of misusing a portion of a $1 million settlement, The Financial Times reports.
The tribe received the money after agreeing to end litigation with
Alltel, a telecommunications company. The money was distributed to the nine districts on the Pine Ridge Reservation, with each receiving $100,000.
The Oglala District was supposed to use its share for community programs. But tribal elders say that never happened.
“When you give that poor a community that much money, it causes trouble,” former tribal president Gerard One Feather, 74, told FT.
A ruling in the case from a tribal chief justice is due October 24, the paper said.
