Brewer sworn in ahead of Dec. 7 inauguration

Native Sun News Staff Writer PINE RIDGE — The Oglala Sioux Tribe is making final preparations for its presidential inauguration ceremony, which will take place on Friday, Dec. 7, at the Pine Ridge High School gymnasium. The event will mark a move in a new direction for the tribe with the seating of a new president in Bryan Brewer, who will hold the office for the first time. In addition, the nine newly elected tribal council representatives will also be part of the ceremony on Dec.7. The inauguration ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. followed by a dinner at 4 p.m. and a powwow later that evening, with grand entry starting at 7 p.m. Along with the elected council, Brewer was sworn in ahead of the inauguration on Dec. 4 in Wounded Knee, where the first tribal council meeting of the Brewer administration was held. At the meeting the council selected Mason Big Crow to continue as tribal treasurer, Rhonda Two Eagle as tribal secretary, David Pourier as fifth member and Abraham Tobacco as sergeant at arms. Brewer has replaced John Yellow Bird Steele, who set a precedent by serving in the tribe’s top spot for six nonconsecutive two-year terms since 1992.
