Leaders of Cherokee Nation in Washington DC for inauguration

Leaders of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma are in Washington, D.C., to attend the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Council member Joe Byrd, a former chief of the tribe, attended Obama's historic inauguration in 2009. He said this year's event also holds significance.

“There is a lot of optimism going into the second term,” Byrd told FOX23. “There’s just a lot of hope.”

Byrd said tribal leaders also met with Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-Oklahoma), a tribal citizen.
