Kind Hearted Woman, a documentary about abuse on the Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota, airs on PBS on April 1 and April 2.

Robin Poor Bear, who is identified as Robin Charboneau in the film, discovers her daughter was sexually abused by her ex-husband. She struggles to keep her family together as she battles for custody of her children in tribal court. The tribe has come under fire for reportedly high rates of child abuse.

“I needed to open my mouth, and I needed to speak," Poor Bear says in the film.

Poor Bear's ex-husband was convicted of sexually abusing his daughter.
