Navajo president delivers annual State of the Nation address

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly delivered the annual State of the Nation address on Monday.

Shelly addressed Navajo Nation Council delegates at the tribe's capital in Window Rock, Arizona. He emphasized the tribe's energy interests, including a controversial purchase of a coal mine on the New Mexico portion reservation and a controversial lease extension for a coal-fired power plant on the Arizona portion.

"We talk of self-determination and sovereignty, yet we squabble over the details and jeopardize the ability of these hard working families to determine for themselves what is best for their families," Shelly said of the two deals that are projected to generate revenues and jobs on the reservation, The Farmington Daily Times reported.
