Hopi Tribe receives permit to take eagles for ceremonial use

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona will receive a federal permit to take up to 40 nesting golden eagles.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to limit the tribe to 35 eagles from its reservation and 5 eagles from the Navajo Nation. But after discussing the issue with both tribes and looking at the scientific data, the agency said it was not placing a limit on the number of eagles taken from Navajo land.

The tribe uses eagles for ceremonial purposes.
