Cow Creek Band estimates $500K in damages due to fire

The Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians just spent $15 million to acquire a ranch when a fire caused an estimated $500,000 in damages.

The fire was restricted to a barn on the 1,700-acre Rogue River Ranch. "How fortunate that there was no loss of life," spokesperson Susan Ferris told The Medford Mail Tribune.

The tribe closed on the ranch last week and took possession of the property on Monday. The fire broke out on Tuesday, in a barn that was being used to store hay.

The ranch is near the site where tribal ancestors signed a treaty in 1853.
