Premiers back inquiry on missing and murdered Native women

The top leaders of Canada's provinces and territories are supporting a national inquiry into missing and murdered Native women.

Activists have documented more than 600 cases in which Native women disappeared under mysterious circumstances or were murdered. Incidents have occurred in every province and area of Canada , with some cases representing the work of serial killers and stalkers.

"It is not a Native women's issue, or an aboriginal issue. For us, it's a Canadian issue and everybody is affected by that, Michèle Audette, the president of the Native Women's Association, which lobbied the premiers to support the inquiry, told CBC News.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper would have to call the inquiry.
