Chippewa Cree Tribe delays swearing-in of chair amid challenge

The Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana is going without a leader after a swearing-in for newly-elected Chairman Ken Blatt St. Marks was delayed.

St. Marks was ousted by the tribal council in March but won his seat back in a special election on July 30. The election board, however, didn't show up for a ceremony on Tuesday.

“They’re doing everything they can to stall,” St. Marks told The Havre Daily News. “The people’s and my own civil rights are being stepped on.”

According to the tribe's website, someone filed a legal challenge to the July 30 election.
