Moapa Band sues energy company over waste at power facility

The Moapa Band of Paiute Indians in Nevada filed suit against an energy company that operates a coal-fired power plant next to the reservation.

The tribe blames NV Energy for decades of health and environmental woes. The lawsuit seeks the cleanup of an ash dump at the Reid Gardner Generating Station.

“We are all looking forward to the retirement of the Reid Gardner coal-fired plant that has for decades polluted our Reservation,” Vickie Simmons, a tribal leader, said in a press release. “And for the sake of our families’ health, we must ensure that the toxic waste from the power plant is fully cleaned up. The safety of our community and the future of our children depend on it.”

The tribe is already suing the Environmental Protection Agency to impose harsher standards on the plant, which is due to close by 2017.
