North Dakota tribes oppose power line through historic site

The United Tribes of North Dakota adopted a resolution opposing a power line through the Killdeer Mountain Battlefield Historic Site.

U.S. soldiers attacked a peaceful tribal camp at the site in July 1864. Although some tribal ancestors managed to escape, others died and were buried there.

“That was the last resting place for those people,” Diane Desrosiers, the tribal historic preservation officer for the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, told Forum News Service. "It doesn’t seem right that we should disturb them.”

The state Public Service Commission is taking public comments on a proposal by Basin Electric Power Cooperative to build a power line through the site, which is privately owned. The case is PU-11-696.
