United Auburn Indian Community sued by banished members

Four banished members of the United Auburn Indian Community of California are suing the tribe in federal court.

Former chairwoman Jessica Tavares and former council member Dolly Suehead were among seven people who were banished for criticizing tribal leaders. They were barred from the reservation, denied from receiving tribal services and cut off from their per capita payments.

Tavares claims in the lawsuit that she has been denied up to $2 million, The Sacramento Bee reported. Her banishment is due to end in 2015.

Tavares, Suehead and two other banished members filed the suit.
