Pokagon Band chair to lead Michigan Department of Civil Rights

Matt Wesaw, the chairman of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, has been named executive director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

Wesaw will step down as chair for his new job. He's due to start work on October 28.

“I feel very privileged and honored to have been selected as Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights,” Wesaw said in a press release. “Having served on the Commission for several years, Civil Rights is an area that I am very passionate about and I’m excited to focus on it in the final phase of my career.”

Wesaw has led his tribe since 2008.
