Interior Secretary Jewell to visit Citizen Potawatomi Nation

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell will visit Oklahoma on Monday to meet with the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.

Jewell will sign the tribe's HEARTH Act regulations. The tribe will gain more control of its lands for housing, leasing and other economic development opportunities.

The trip marks Jewell's first visit to Oklahoma since taking over the Interior Department in April. She once worked in the state for the energy industry.

Jewell will be joined by Assistant Secretary Kevin Washburn, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. They are signing the signing the regulations with CPN Chairman John Barrett and Vice Chair Linda Capps.

Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma), a member of the Chickasaw Nation who was one of the co-sponsors of the HEARTH Act, will also attend

The ceremony takes place at 10am at the Potawatomi National Cultural Heritage Center in Shawnee.
