Haliwa-Saponi Tribe told to pay $527 property tax bill to county

The Haliwa-Saponi Tribe of North Carolina plans to appeal a $527 property tax bill.

The tribe cited treaties and recognition by the state government as the basis for its tax exemption. But commissioners in Halifax County rejected those arguments and said the tribe could have avoided the bill by filing paperwork on time.

“This is about liberty,” Earl Evans told the county commission, The Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald reported. “These are rights we have had that predate Halifax County as an Indian tribe and a nation of people.”

The tribe will take the case to the N.C. Property Tax Commission.
