Tribe demands firing of IHS worker for botched screening

The Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Tribe of Nevada is calling on the Indian Health Service to fire an employee who botched a diabetes screening that may have exposed people to infectious diseases.

Chairman Tildon Smart said the employee in question has been the subject of numerous complaints. The employee has been placed on administrative leave.

“I don’t trust her," Smart told The Reno Gazette-Journal.

At least 21 members took part in the screening at the NuNu Diabetes Wellness Clinic. Their blood glucose levels were checked but the monitoring pen appears to have been reused.

The IHS began testing tribal members after learning of the potential beach. But Smart questioned why the agency has already told some people they aren't infected.

“Many of them are driving to Humboldt General Hospital to get their tests done because they don’t trust IHS," Smart told the paper.
