Yurok Tribe to sell carbon credits through California program

The Yurok Tribe has joined the carbon trading market in California.

The tribe registered 7,660 acres of forestland with the help of investment group New Forests. The tribe will be issued 704,520 offset credits that can be sold and traded on the open market.

“This carbon offset project will foster the restoration of a significant swath of forest," Chairman Thomas P. O’Rourke Sr., said in a press release. Our partnership with New Forests will provide the Tribe with the means to boost biodiversity, accelerate watershed restoration, and increase the abundance of important cultural resources like acorns, huckleberry and hundreds of medicinal plants that thrive in a fully functioning forest ecosystem.”
